Title: According to my mother... (Amusing Tales of SSBB)
Post by: Keith Hemari on March 10, 2008, 10:26:59 PM
Meta Knight is a 'rotund little bat with a knife' or, to put it more succinctly: The Vegimatic.

Snake and Captain Falcon are both clearly women because they 'run like they're wearing high-heels' and Ivysaur is clearly a 'flower pig'

And, at one point, when the Ice Climbers fell off the stage, she said to me (with a straight face, mind you) "Aww, your Eskmos died."

I am so glad we can both enjoy this game XD

Anyone else have any talse of Bra-uh... Bra\/\/l amusement?

Amusing tales of the Sonic Stadium message board? ;P

I've had some great moments when my mother would look at me and my friends playing Melee, unfortunately none come to mind right now. c_c
But since my mom generally enjoyed videogames much as well, her view on the subject gave me moments of surprising clarity. I wouldn't have expected my mother to recognize any pokemon besides Pikachu, for instance.

Round little bat with knife, Flower pig, and Eskimos are pretty accurate descriptions of the characters, I've gotta say.

My mom and grandmother asked me "Who is that? Is that Johnny 5?" when I was playing as ROB, and I was pretty much the only one in my house who knew who the hell Lucas and Snake were.

In Lucas' case, that's not at all surprising and if anything, even fairly obvious unless your mother and/or grandmother are regular gamers who prefer imported Japanese RPG's. :bored:
In Snake's case, again not -too- surprising, even though Snake's a fair deal more recognizable, since he actually may have appeared in a few Metal Gear Solid TV commercials in America (I know he did in the Netherlands, at least).

The ROB/Johnny 5 comparison is pretty nice though, and come to think of it, the resemblance is indeed fairly striking. =P

Eh, I know, too be honest I was suprised that my mom knew who Meta Knight and King DeDeDe were.

That is surprising, yeah... perhaps she stumbled upon the Kirby cartoon recently? Or did you use to play Kirby a lot on your SNES when you were younger, perhaps? I know my mom recognised most characters from games I used to play fairly well, too; at least, most of the time up until I started playing games in my own room rather then the living room.
When I still had consoles (Master System, Mega Drive) in the living room, mom used to play practically everything I did. I often drew the characters from the videogames I played, and she was usually able to recognize who it was I was drawing, characters like Sonic (of course), Alex Kidd, the Kiwi from New Zealand Story, Dynamite Headdy, Lemmings, or even Dark Force from Phantasy Star 2 (I was stuck at that battle for a fairly long time, you see. =P).

Also, see edit. =P

When we first booted up the game, my dad decided it was Pokémon, having recognized Pikachu and Squirtle.

I don't know why he expected a Pokémon game to have Sonic in it.

I got my gaming skillzors and love for it from my father. I guess she must have seen him play Kirby's Adventure cause the first Kirby game I ever played was Kirby 64, until then I just knew him as "That guy". Hillariously, when the first Smash Bros. came out and I had neither played Kirby nor Pokemon before, I had thought that Jigglypuff was Kirby's girlfriend and that Samus was an original character.
Oddly enough I knew Ness was from Earthbound, Captain Falcon was from F-Zero, and Fox was from Star Fox even though no one else knew that. I remember thinking "How the hell will Falcon fight?", I also remember seeing a trailer and Mario's Wario costume, I thought my Nintendo Power had forgotten a character since the clip with the Wario costume lasted less than 5 seconds. (teaser trailer)

Please tell me it was a fight and that you were on Pokemon Stadium/Pokemon Stadium 2. I don't care who you are, even my grandfather who can't pronounce Mario right or knows the difference between Pichu and Pikachu can tell that if there's a freaking monkey in the middle of space ontop of a spaceship it isn't pokemon, even if the opponent is Pikachu.

I'm guessing he means the intro movie?

My dad calls Lucas Lupus. He knows the correct name, he just finds it funny.

I dunno, I think if you're familiar enough with SSB or EarthBound to note the similarities to Ness you can probably figure it out.

Yeah, if you're a frequent player, probably. Keep in mind we're discussing someone's parents and/or grandparents, though.
Just because they look kind of similar (which, indeed, could cause someone to make the connection that they indeed belong to the same general game series), doesn't neccesarily mean someone immediately knows who that character's supposed to be.
The best scenario I can imagine would be along the lines of "Hey, I kinda know who Ness is supposed to be but who's the blonde kid, is that his little brother or something?".

Mother: What's going on?
Josh: Well, I got a certain amount of trophies and I'm trying to get all of them so-
Mother: Hold on, what is that? He's cute.
Josh: That's Kirby.
Mother: Why doesn't he have a nose? Give him a nose.
Josh: I... I can't give him a nose.
Mother: Why not? GIVE HIM A NOSE!

Have him suck up Olimar, then you can give him a nose.

Well, I was playing a 1vs1 Melee match with someone.  He chose Wario and I chose Pikachu (random).  Anyway, we were playing fine until I dropped my controller and pikachu was just laying there on the ground after getting hit.  Wario grabs his bike, totally misses Pikachu (after running over him), and falls off the stage somehow.  It was like a possum playing dead and causing a car wreck.  It's not exactly a parental tale, but amusing all the same, I guess.

I was Samus and my friend was Link. We were playing online when a Smash Ball showed up. It was on the left side of the stage where I was and I was beating up on it. I was floating above it because I had finished my round of moves and my friend fires one arrow with Link, hits it and gets the Final Smash. I was so pissed/amused.

On Sunday, during the seven man marathon that happened in my room we had a death by peanut. It's similar to Milo's story but involves a carefully aimed, and incredibly lucky shot from Diddy Kong against Pit. If he hadn't gotten lucky on that it would have been over for him, but he did, and owned the shit out of our friend.

Half of us were stoked about it, half were pissed. We have yet to reestablish diplomatic relations over this incident between the two groups.

Thaty reminds me of that one time I used Luigi's Taunt in Melee to finish off one of my friends playing Marth, who was cliffhanging, just about to recover.
That moment was so epic, everyone just went silent for a small moment, then started laughing/cheering. XD

Got another one from today.

I was Sonic, Friend 1 was Link and Friend 2 was Snake. Friend was had a Mr. Freeze and said aloud, "How do I throw this?" He pressed Z and tossed it upwards. I thought, "Oh, sweet, he wasn't able to hit anyone." I ran towards snake and he hit me with a rocket. I flew backwards and collided with Mr. Freeze while it was coming down from its fall.

We had a good laugh.

One from an online match. I was Marth, playing against a human player and two CPUs. I was losing by like a kill, then I got the smash ball. I'm running around, trying to stay out of the frey, looking for the most opportune time to use the final smash, when all three of my opponents jump onto a platform and start beating on each other. So, I jumped in the air, hit B, and took them all out Toshiro Mifune style. I got like one more KO and ended up wining the match. It was awesome.

Did you strike a finishing pose and hold it for like 30 seconds?

High damage + two well-placed bumpers = hilarity!

I couldn't stop bouncy back and forth! I also couldn't breathe!

Guys, hilarious as each and everyone's stories are, there's a difference between "humorous Brawl Experiences", which there is another topic about, and "what do confused onlookers say about you playing Brawl", which is this topic. =P

I let my mom play around in Training mode, and she chose Wolf, because my mom likes wolves, and she kept pressing his up taunt to make him howl. Then I had her attempt Target Smash level 1, but she got frustrated with the controls and didn't want to play anymore.

She had fun with coin launcher though. And looking through the trophies.
