Title: (DEV) Developer's Corner
Post by: Sz on August 26, 2008, 11:30:47 PM
I'm not sure how much there's actually to post about, but I know a number of people here have their own little projects going on. If you'd like to share your progress or give a quick overview of the project, but otherwise wouldn't post about it... this is the topic forum for it!

(Note: since this particular forum isn't viewable for guests, so there's a slight bit of added confidentiality there...)

As for me, I'm pretty close to going public with one of my games for serious. Technically it's already "public", but since I haven't spread the link around much it doesn't really count... and anyway I'm fixing stuff up for the second, and perhaps final, demo.

But here are some (1 old, 1 new...ish) screenshots anyway:

For the uninformed, this is a J2ME MIDP 2.0 cell phone game.

Whether we need a seperate forum for this is up for debate, but since OPP has kinda stagnated, at the very least I figure we could talk about other stuff that hasn't. ;P

Edit: And Spazz made a new forum for it!! But that might be a good idea, we'll go with it for now and collapse it back down later if it proves to be unnecessary.

Just wanna say I think this is a cool idea.  And yes, I have ... projects.  They're just infantile as usual.  However I do have a strong feeling about one.  Might finally catch up to 1994 this time.

Same.

My project isn't quite about programming though. Is it still fair game for this board?

Is it software/game development related in any way/shape/form?

Does it have to be?

Like strictly speaking? Does it absolutely have to be video game related?

Your sort of asking for rules on a newly created board that doesn't even have rules yet.
My opinion, throw out here whatever you're developing. It's not like we're ultra sticklers about what gets posted where, and this does say Developer's Corner, which could involve developing anything.
My advice though, if it's not absolutely obvious whether your program is a game or app or whatever from the thread title, then use a tag like [Game] or [App] or [Internet app] or something, just so people browsing the forum don't get hyper excited by what seems to be a breakthrough MMORPG and it ends up being... a calculator app or something.

Yeah, labels would be nice, even if it's "presenting <name>, my new <whatever it is>".

As far as what belongs... I think the outlying cases are tabletop games. Say if you have a new tabletop game planned out that would qualify, but a new D&D mission probably not. The latter is more of a written work in the framework of D&D, whereas the former is development related.

It's not really a big deal though, the worst case is it gets moved to a different forum. *shrug*

While it's not a "video game" nor "software", it is a "game" and a standalone product. Obviously I'm loathe to release too many details just yet being how early it is in development, but it is something that can certainly be 'developed' and would not fit in Written Works or the Artwork Archives.

And I kind of remembered that c'mon this is Sz we're talking about and yeah it doesn't really matter he's not going to kill me or anything if it doesn't belong.

I'm not amazed that anyone figured it out. It is, at present time, a card game, maybe using the collectible model.

I'm more amazed that drak is DREDGING UP my OLD NAMES.

RAGE!? (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=87922)

So it's established that it can also be any type of structured game design?

man fuck you people I think the card game market has tons of options for innovation outside of game mechanics including innovation in distribution

I mean, really, I've invested a bit of thinking time to them and wondering how to solve such problems as: how to appeal to the crowd who think they're too expensive to get into! I wonder if there's a place on the forums to talk about game theory in general, including this specific topic...
