I've got a better idea, let's make this about Wario Land instead.
-
What the....?
Um... yeah... the crouch hacking is pretty cool, but you can do that sort of stuff in Sonic games, such as one method called "zipping".
I'm honestly not sure how to respond to the rest. It... I mean how do they even come close to achieving your goal?
-
I need to play more Mario, I don't know who half of the characters are in that big group picture.
-
Mario is cool because Bowser is a thing.

Donkey Kong and Bowser should be pretty obvious, Tatanga is from the original Mario Land, Wario is Mario Land 2, Wart is the imported Mario 2, and the rest are RPG boss characters from some of the different branches there
-
Whose the big demon Fianl Fantasy guy? He's literally hte only I don't recognize. Also the Millenium Star is from Mario Party 3, not an RPG.
Unless that's supposed to be Culex.
-
You guys are really not making your case if a lot of the good bad guys in the series are in spin-offs and party games.
-
Sadly Shigeru has gone mad and decided that Mario needed to be as generic as possible, so he's made a Bowser only rule for the later entries in the main series... and the last boss of Mario and Luigi Dream Team is apparently...
A Giant Bowser.....
Eat a dick Mymatio.
-
Shigeru'd again I see.
-
Mario sucks. Luigi is best.
-
Good news, it's the year of Luigi! Bad news, it's more than half over.
-
To persuade Sofox to see the light I will offer the following points:
1. Mario, despite dressing up as an animal more than once, is not attached to the furry fandom.
2. Mario was protrayed by Captain Lou Albano, who could beat Steve Urkel in a fight.
3. He rides around on a dinosaur.
4. Mario is kinda fat, how many other world icons are kinda fat? He survives and excells in an industry where heroes are basically all paramilitary white badass dudes trying to be badass. Mario is just keeping it real.
5. He had a cereal.
-
6. He's a plumber, suggesting he has invested in his own future through trade school education
7. He does all this shit for a Princess without demanding reward
8. Invites Bowser and Donkey Kong to go Go-Karting
9. Hard core Parkour
10. Collects all these different power star type things and never once tries to take over the world
All in all, Humble Adventurer Broski
-

I think this ancient song by Benefit properly articulates why Mario is like a white Morris Day.

P.S. If anyone is a fan of Protomen-esque rock projects based on geekery, Jonathan Mann's Mario Opera (http://jonathanmann.bandcamp.com/album/the-mario-opera-act-1-demos) is going to be played up in NYC at Joe's Pub (http://www.joespub.com/component/option,com_shows/task,view/Itemid,40/id,6878) this Saturday.
-
In response to your P.S.: That second Protomen album is basically one of the best records I've ever heard. Became absolutely obsessed with that one. I will have to check out this Mario Opera (not in person, obviously, being in Blighty).

R.C. doesn't post here much anymore, but you would get along well with him over that one. One caveat is that the Mario Opera sounded much more...light and hipstery instead of the dark and hard rock Protomen from what I can tell. Truth be told, I was planning on going to the Mario Opera performance, but decided against it as I wasn't enjoying the artist's sound at all. Oh, well.
As for Mario being pretty cool, then, there's the fabulous soundtracks...

...and promos which are spectacular...

Also Mario is pretty cool because HE HAS HAD A SERIES OF FANTASTIC GAMES THAT HAVE HELD UP OVER THE PAST THIRTY YEARS.
I mean
c'mon
Donkey Kong
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3 and World and the fucking GALAXY GAMES
have you played Super Mario Galaxy
I mean if this is you trying to say that Sonic is cooler than Mario then um
look I have a secret to tell you
There are way more good Mario games than there are Sonic games oops

Did you show him your sonic tattoo.
-
Real talk I'm not actually sure Galaxy is as stupendous as everyone remembers.
-
It depends on which Galaxy you're talking about. I started Galaxy 1 after Christmas and finished the story mode in March or April. (Can't remember which, and yes, I'm fully aware of how behind I am with gaming.) The soundtrack alone sold it for me. Gameplay is well-polished, and plot points were very tastefully done for the minimalistic story of a Mario platformer. The same goes for Rosalina's Little Prince-esque story and the introduction to the Lumas which was like playing a litter of puppies throughout the game.
Galaxy 2 on the other hand... It's the same basic formula, but it's off. Gameplay feels a lot clunkier due to the obnoxiously higher difficulty early on and awkward use of Yoshi (which I didn't like in Galaxy 2 or Sunshine). Lubba is like a Snarf or an Orko greeting the player between levels. The soundtrack (so far) is forgettable, and the charm of Galaxy 1 just isn't there. It feels like small, somewhat nitpicky things, but they come together and result in the same problem I had with Sonic Adventure years ago where the second game is a technically-fine new take on a well-polished composition that just lacks the same magic.

Heh, that actually is a neat video. By sheer coincidence I'd been thinking of it on the day you posted it.
im confused does sofox not like to play super mario games or something
Not really, I mean it's not like I've never played them. And a few weeks ago I got playing Mario 64 on a cousin's N64 and actually found it pretty good. But generally I've no compulsion to play any of the Mario games or pay much attention to them, and like I said the only one I've ever finished was Super Mario Brothers 2 (the Advance version for the Game Boy Advance).
-
You've never experienced the joy of snorting a line of Mama Luigi's spaghetti off of the ass of a hooker named Peach, have you
-
I'm a little thrown off by the idea of someone who enjoys video games but has not played many Mario games?
I mean, he's like an ICON of platform gaming. Pick up Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 and if you've got some friends over then New Super Mario Bros. Wii. You won't be disappointed.
-
If you think Robotnik is a nasty bad guy, wait until you get a load of Bowser's pure, unfiltered cruelty (http://i.imgur.com/SnYS23r.jpg).
-
Is thje bad news that his hair is pink?
I'm talking specifically about Galaxy 1. I don't think anyone is hoisting Galaxy 2 onto their shoulders and marching through the streets, cheering.
-
It saddens me that you weren't moved by the puppy-like Lumas. JOSHI, HOW COULD YOU HATE PUPPIES. D:
In all seriousness, I don't follow the problem. Given, I'm not arguing that Galaxy 1 was the end-all perfect game of all time, and I wouldn't try establishing a best-ever Mario game as there's too much variety amongst the genres and gaming eras. (Though, I would argue that the variety is one of the biggest pluses for the franchise as a whole.)
However, I would say that it had many quality elements and was a thoroughly enjoyable entry. I'd just as quickly sing the praises of Mario 64, many of the 2D platformers, and at least five or six of the various Mario RPGs.
-
Yeah I mean don't get me wrong, it was a good game. But some people treat it at THE BEST mario game, or even game of the year every year, and that's just... I don't think that's the case.
Granted, it's been a while since I've played it, but... that's sort of my point! I have absolutely *no* desire to replay that game.
-
I must add that I wasn't all that impressed by what little I played of it in a store kiosk. I mean, it looked like it'd be fun for a bit but it's not "greatest game in the series" good based on that alone.
Of course, the kiosk may have just been on a bad level.
-
I think Galaxy represents the absolute best that a 3D Mario game has to offer. The control is elegant, the music is awesome, it's a real fresh spin on a lot of the classic dynamics. But I'll entertain the possibility that you might just have to be a hardcore Mario player who has gone through and appreciated the evolution of the franchise.
Galaxy 2 was kind of a shallow clone of Galaxy 1. It had some good stuff in it, but diminished the heart.
-
That's the thing, though. Sonic and Mario were my childhood! I reading internet arguments about which series was better and thinking "I enjoy both of these things. Why argue?" I've played every main-series game up through Sunshine and I played MANY of the side-series games. While again it may have just been the level the kiosk was on, I just didn't feel all that compelled to pick the game up. It just felt like a Mario version of the "Mad Space" level from Sonic Adventure 2 but with proper physics instead of "Sonic Adventure"-era Sonic physics. This isn't -bad- mind you and it is a neat thing but it just doesn't feel like as big of a deal as everyone on the internet makes it out to be I guess?
-
I can't tell you what to think obviously, and it's not like anything works for everybody other than breathing, but you are judging an entire game from a kiosk demo. The visuals in the game are pretty and the music is really a beautiful orchestra if you give it a chance. There's a few pain in the ass levels (isn't there always?), but it's really worth giving it a chance and actually trying to sit down and play it.
I suppose I don't know what "The Internet" is saying about it. I don't know if I'd call it the greatest Mario game ever. (I probably would eternally hold that as Super Mario Bros. 3 myself.) But I do think it's an excellent 3D Mario game that's pretty easy to pick up and run with. Mario 64 was really special for the time, but it's frustrating to play. Excusable I suppose because 3D was certainly a relatively new contraption, especially for Nintendo. I had way too many control issues with Sunshine and found it aggravating. Galaxy seemed to just figure everything out, finally.
-
Sometimes I get really excited by the idea of replaying Galaxy, but then I remember that robot that wants you to blow up his garbage.
-
Mario was an invention a sense- from the Landlord of Luigi's Mansion.

When was the last time a new Dr. Mario came out?
-
I got to play Mario 3D World over the weekend.
It was okay. I'm a little worried that the level design's gonna be as bleh as 3D Land, and the Wiimote controls are fucking atrocious, but the multiplayer was good.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3 (And every other Mario cartoon) is awesome.
The same cannot be said for Sonic..
-
If by "awesome" you mean "seemed great as a kid but nostalgia goggles aside actually pretty shit" then yeah, the Mario cartoons were "awesome."
Same goes for the Sonic cartoons, actually.
-
Sonic Underground confirmed for best cartoon ever

I think you're really glossing over the Capt. Lou factor.
-
Another thing Mario has over Sonic is that the Mario games aren't filled up the wazoo with game-breaking bugs and terrible physics.
I mean look at this garbage:

-
It's not just nostalgia glasses. The old Mario cartoons really captured the feel of the games. All of Mario's power-ups were there, the green pipes, even sound effects from the games.
None of Sonic's cartoons were able to do that.
SatAM was full of original characters & furry drama bullshit
Underground had that dumb rock-band angle, and added some Hedgehog Queen.
Sonic X focused more on the new human characters & had an awful dub.
AoSTH looked like garbage, & introduced that dumb chili dog thing, but at least it was funny. Still lacked the feel of the games, though.

Yeah, Sonic2006 was awful, but still, I've had way more fun playing games like SA1, SA2, Unleashed, Generations, SEGA Tennis, the first Sonic Riders & Advance series,
than I ever did with Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, Mario Party, Smash Bros, MK: Double Dash! Luigi's Mansion, or any other retarded Mario spinoff.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the classic NES & SNES Mario's, but I haven't really been impressed by a Mario game since Mario 64..
IMO, Mario jumped the shark years ago..
-
Well, at the time the Sonic and Mario shows were respectively made, the Mario games had more characters and lore then (ironically) the Sonic games did. There just wasn't as much to work with.
-
AoSTH looked like garbage, & introduced that dumb chili dog thing, but at least it was funny. Still lacked the feel of the games, though.
Granted it didn't really reflect the games, but of all of the 90s cartoons, it did at least have the most actual game references.

I'll agree to a point that a lot of modern Mario games aren't remarkable. But I think a little break down is needed.
- Sunshine was kind of an experiment that mostly didn't work out. (More than anything, control issues made it unplayable for me.)
- The modern real-3D Mario Kart games make for excellent multiplayer, and in their own genre I think they stand on their own. Granted the most recent iterations since MKWii haven't been ground-breaking.
- Smash Bros. is mostly for people who like crossovers among their favorite characters duking it out. If that doesn't appear to you, then it's just not going to work.
- Paper Mario is a mixed bag. The original and TYD were decent RPGs with a lot of good humor. Super Paper Mario is really a hybrid platformer, but still had a lot of the charm. Sticker Star just kind of ruined it for me -- too much creative control took away the bit of charm it had left, made it the only one I have no desire to replay. I'd say judge each of them individually for their strengths and weaknesses, because they're not really consistent.
- Mario Galaxy to me was the first 3D Mario that really worked. Mario 64 was special as a period piece, but it was often tedious to play. Galaxy refined the control scheme and included a lot of pretty visuals with an excellent orchestra that conveyed a vast universe. With exception of a few annoying gag levels, the game is just fun to play without being overly challenging most of the time, which is a feature I like in Mario games. The story was better in the first one. The second one felt more like an "Add-On Level Pack."
- New Super Mario Bros. is overall nothing new, ironically. It is pretty much just classic style gameplay. However, those of us with fond memories of playing the old games often find comfort in it. The NES was easily the most favorable memory of my childhood, and caused a lot of bonding among my siblings. NSMB doesn't really bring anything to the table, but it's Good Old Mario, and for some of us, that's all we ever really wanted.
-
Granted the most recent iterations since MKWii haven't been ground-breaking.
All one of them.
-
Look. Mario solves racism.

Did Sonic ever solve racism?
-
Granted the most recent iterations since MKWii haven't been ground-breaking.
All one of them.
I was thinking ahead to what I've seen so far with the Wii U one.
-
You mean the one that turns into F-Zero? That's like the Most Different looking Mario Kart of them all.
-
What ever happened to F-Zero? GX was stunning, I'd love a follow up. Or a 3DS version could be cool.
-
something about we've done all we can with f zero i think
-
It's more like they don't know what to do with F-Zero. They DO want to make another one, though.
-
A 3DS F-Zero would be amazing, I bet.
But then, I said the same thing about a motion controlled Star Fox on the Wii, and that never happened either so *shruuuugggg*
-
What's there to do? Just try make it feel a little bit faster, whack it on the 3DS and let people enjoy the motion sickness madness.
-
It was already insanely fast in GX/AX. I don't see how they could make it any faster.
-
Faster.
-
But then, I said the same thing about a motion controlled Star Fox on the Wii, and that never happened either so
hmm
-
Faster.
I guess it falls to me then.
