SERTek: Banned from server?
« on: February 15, 2008, 11:25:49 AM »
I'm trying to connect to PSIGenix's Mainstreet server on IRC while at Panera, but I'm getting this message:

mainstreet.psigenix.net- *** You are banned from PSIGenix (Your host appears in the XBL (See http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=64.241.37.140 or email support@psigenix.net for more information))

I don't understand why I would be banned from a server. Could someone at least shed a light on what an XBL is?

Looks like someone else was an ass while at Panera's.

That's the thing... I haven't done anything.

At least... I haven't done anything that would make me look like an ass.

It's a false reading. Go click the link and get it removed. I've had it happen to me twice before.

I... didn't say you did anything.

Do not listen to Tonic. He is malfunctioning. Pushing is the answer. These things are almost never false positives, and your address has been re-listed.

So first off, the Psigenix IRCops have told me that you will not be disconnected if you log into NickServ within the first 8 seconds of your connection. So make sure your client is automatically supplying a NickServ password on connect. If you don't have a NickServ account, ask someone to make one for you.

Secondly, you are on the CBL because either you or someone with the same IP address is infected with a virus which is sending out spam. To figure out if it is you, check the IP address of your computer. Do not use an external site like whatismyip.com. Check it in the Windows networking settings. If you are unsure of how to do that, I can provide instructions. If the IP for your computer in those settings is 64.241.37.140, then you are the one infected. If it is not 64.241.37.140, then it may or may not be you infected.

If you are using Windows XP, there is a freeware program called ActivePorts which can detect which programs on your computer are accessing the Internet. That may provide you with proof that you are or are not the culprit. Once you figure out if you are or are not the culprit, get your school's IT staff (I'm assuming that Panera is a school) to track down what is causing the IP to be blacklisted on the CPL. They will be able to disable net access for the infected party or parties, and help to clean the computers.

Panera is actually a food place (I hesitate to call it a restaurant.  Cafe, maybe?) with free wireless.

..Or it is around here, at least.

Oh, well, then, everyone in that store has the same IP address. Someone connecting at the store has a virus or is sending out spam. There's not much you can do besides NickServ then, unless the people who run the cafe are prepared to monitor and block anyone with a virus. Seems kind of onerous for a cafe.

I tried NickServ back when that was happening. Didn't work. Kept saying I didn't have privileges to use /msg.

Problem's over now, since I followed the string of links, but I'm wondering how you make NickServ work automatically. I'm kinda getting tired of typing in the whole IDENTIFY string in every time.

Thanks for the shortcut, but I'm still curious as to how to get it to auto-NickServ.

In mIRC, go to Tools, Options, then the Options... option in the Connect branch, then hit the Perform button and type/paste the /ns command in there.  And then obviously hit Okay in both windows.
