I still couldn't invite you, so I asked Matrixx to invite you to the group and he kindly obliged.
Let me know if you get it, in the meantime, I'm going see if we can still be friends... in the Steam sense of the word.

About one hour left until the event. I should probably look at the insert with the controls so I can figure out any addition keys I should know.

Okay, it's 8PM GMT. What now?

We're all together in chat, anyone else just join whatever we join (there's an option to on the friends list or wherever group members are listed). Server password is, as always, "ringeaters".

Well, that went well. Thanks everybody for turning up and ensuring that this first TF2 event was something other then an abject failure. We had some hiccups and technical problems for our first shot at it, but I think we had a good time. I'll make sure to schedule another event when people feel like it.
As well as that, Arch has generously offered to try to set up and host a TF2 server that we might be able to play on for our next TF2 event, as I think we've already visited the consequences of meeting up on a public server.
Anyway, thanks again all and good game!

I still haven't gotten the server working, and I don't know if I will, so we might not be able to use my server. We shall see.

Hmm, yeah, it went well enough, but we need more people so we don't get such unbalanced teams.

Thanks for suggesting it, Sofox!

For the record, the version of source engine that TF2 (or any of the orange box stuff) is in, isn't exactly light on the requirements. I mean yeah, it will run on most hardware from the past 4 or 5 years, but there is a significant drop in performance in TF2 compared to a game like CS:S.

For the record, Blaze's hardware is about 5 years old, IIRC.

For the record, Blaze's hardware is about 5 years old, IIRC.

3. It was 5 years old, but then Ashuku gave me some spare parts he had laying around which gave me an increase in hardware oomph. It's not top-of-the-line, but it's a lot better than what I had. I has:

3.2ghz Pentium 4 (Hyperthreading)
512mb of RAM (DDR2?)
GeForce 5200 FX PCI

Everything on low at 640x480 I get 30-60fps with a couple rare dips in to the teens on really big maps/really big firefights.

Before Ashuku spotted me the spare parts, I had:

1.3ghz Pentium 3
256mb of SDRAM
GeForce 3 Ti 200

I could run HL2 and stuff on that, but barely. Load times for maps would stretch in to over a minute in length and I was constantly getting stuttering.

I don't see why it matters, anyway. What I resolution and settings I run the game at are of no concern to you; it's not like you're somehow going to catch a disease from me because I don't run TF2 at 1400x1280 with 4x FSAA in DX9.

If I can play and enjoy the game that's all that matters to me or to you.

Yeah, well, a lot of people seem like they're offended because I run my Desktop Resolution at 800x600 or my games at 640x480. I've had some stupid as hell arguments arise out of stuff like that when none of it actually matters.

What matters is that I am comfortable.

Today I revenged against three opponents consecutively as a scout. I then laughed maniacally over the headset, to where everyone in the server could hear me.

The processor is great on your computer and the RAM is fine, but my old intel intargratted could probably do better than that FX. I'm pretty sure you could get a motherboard that has PCIe and supports all of your stuff for insanely cheap... Then you could get a low-end PCIe video card (7600gt can be gotten cheap, even around 50 dollars on ebay (eh) and can run tf2 1024x768 easily with full framerate on high settings).

Myself, I used to be quite comfortable with my crappy intel integrated/fx5500 - "hey, i can run psobb at 640x480 at least, that's fine, no need to upgrade" - untill I actually used a newer "mediocre" video card (8600gt) - and I cannot believe how wrong I was. I'm currently fine with what my cheapo 8600gt can pull off even if it is a piece of shit compared to the newer cards now.

On a slightly more on-topic note, I haven't been around for some time due to wireless issues. I think that it's stablized a bit, but I honestly don't know yet. Kiddo gets his upstairs so he gets less problems. :(

His mobo does have PCI-E. But no, the ram isn't fine. If he were to get something like a 7600GT the lack of ram creates a major bottleneck. He'd have to upgrade to at least a gig (but 2 gb's is the best bang for your buck)

I would know. Aside from it being on a different mobo, it's the exact same setup I had for a month or 2. After all, it was my hardware. :P

I upgraded to a 7600GT and still had to run everything lower on medium and stuff unless I wanted to sit for 10+ minutes, waiting for a game to load with stuff bumped up to high. And after it all loaded it'd take a good 5-10 more minutes of gameplay for the memcache to dump and the framerate to smooth out.

So what I'm saying is; No, throwing a 7600GT into his PC will not magically make TF2 run on all high with full framerate. Once again, I would know. I have a 7600gt in my PC right now, a C2D processor (E6420 @2.13ghz) and 2gb of ram. I play at those exact same settings, 1024x768 all high, and while I do have a stable framerate, it dips a lot in TF2. It can go anywhere from 20-70fps, but usually stays around the 30-50fps range.

I'm not saying that's a bad framerate or anything, I'm happy with it... But even if blaze had 2gb of ram and a 7600GT, the P4 would still chug on that game.
