WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH TRIPPING
« on: March 13, 2008, 12:31:53 AM »
Seriously! Is there any rhyme or reason to it or did they put it in just to infuriate me?

I honestly think it's the latter.  I can't figure it out.  It just seems random.  Maybe they had the programming worked out with the banana peel and just decided to toss it in randomly to keep things... uh... interesting?

To quote myself at another forum...

Quote
Okay so tripping is bad because it lets your opponent get cheap shots in on you while you're down.  I can understand this.

Except then a minute later they trip too and you get a cheap shot in on them.  This is, more or less, fair.

Don't get me wrong, it does sound annoying and is something that I'd like to have the option of turning off, but it's hardly unfair.

Actually, no, in retrospect I guess it is a little unfair for the better players when they play against less experienced ones.  The better players are probably going to be getting in hits all the time, regardless of whether the opponent trips, but the beginning would be able to get those few shots in that might turn the battle from complete genocide into a mere loss. (Or from a loss to a win, whatever) So it really seems like it's meant to be more of an equaliser to help the people who are doing worse.  Kinda like how you get better items in Mario Kart if you're farther back.

I've tripped at least once in most of the matches I've played and honestly it hasn't bugged me at all.  I usually don't even notice right away.

Weirdly enough, whenever I trip it actually benefits me. Like, I'll be running and jumping back and forth and trading aerials with an opponent, and then when I try to run at them I'll trip and they'll jump over me and use an aerial on nothing and I get the TACTICAL ADVANTAGE.

It hasn't really hindered me yet :[]

And then I use my recovery attack to score another hit on them. It really depends on how adaptable you are as to how well you take it.

I was going through Allstar as Mario, and for some reason Mario started tripping a lot. It was almost constant during a point in the Mario Bros stage, and ROB got some cheap hits in because of it. Maybe it kicks in if you've been running a lot, but it's a strange addition.

Well, I need to test this, but I think it's a countermeasure to what people used to do in Melee. I've noticed that when it happens, it's always when I'm smashing the control stick in a direction. People used to try and run in the same spot all the time in Melee by repeatedly smashing in different directions rapidly-- this might be to prevent that.

When I trip in real life, it usually hurts and I wish I hadn't done so.

I don't like seeing that happen to my character.

Yeah, I'm going to agree with Seph on this one. It seems to be a way to prevent Dash dancing. Every time I've tripped it's because I smashed the control stick in the opposite direction that I was already running.

No, it's not.  I've tripped a lot in the middle of running and while merely walking, and I've also just run back and forth a lot in the waiting room because I felt bad for Sandbag and not tripped any more than usual.  If anything I tripped less then because I don't recall tripping during the sliding animation.

I've tripped only twice, it's not very often or noticable, so I think you guys are on pot.

I've tripped while sliding many times, Jo. Either during or right after the sliding animation ends.

Tripping doesn't let me outrun the cars on Big Blue as Sonic with the bunny hood for very long.

Once you start tripping, if you don't walk you keep on doing it. I had Kirby constantly stumbling over at one point because of it.

I am rather insane I think because I have yet to have this happen to me.

If it has, I have been unaware of it. Might happen in New Pork City, I can't tell where I am half the time in there.

I've never had a problem with tripping. It has happened to me a couple times though, but there's no pattern or trigger to it (with the possible exception of running/dashing for a long time, but I've had it happen when I was walking and sliding too). I'd call it random. I agree with the theory that it was probably put in to randomly screw up people who bluff dash. It's agreeable. It potentially screws my opponent as much as it does me, with a luck factor thrown in for good measure.

It's realistic. You can pull off a pro flawlessly some of the time, but you can't pull off a pro flawlessly all the time, even when you think you can. Sometimes you screw up and trip.
