Let me tell you. I'm fucking pissed. Retronauts is how I spent a good chunk of my Wednesdays. Although Jeremy Parish was not fired, a good chunk of the staff including Shane and...well...the whole list of those who were also less fortunate are going to be gone. Actually, I wouldnt be suprised if Jeremy just threw up his arms and decided to start up that retro gaming bar that he was thinking about. I doubt it, but is it really that much of a long shot at this point?

So I guess Giant Bomb is the way to go for internet gaming journalism these days. Maybe Game Trailers.

I'm just going to spend the rest of the night trying to grab all the Retronauts episodes that I possibly can. This is just bullshit.

I stopped reading EGM years ago. I don't own any of the current game consoles. but why would anyone get rid of EGM? Aren't they the biggest-selling gaming magazine in publication? Wouldn't it be in the new company's best interests to keep making the magazine, since it's profitable?

I wonder if my old issues from 97-2004 will be worth alot now.

Bummer, I guess.

But considering how unstable game journalism has been in the last 18 months, this isn't really effecting me too much. I'm sure everybody important who is getting booted out of 1up.com will find nice cozy homes on other sites.

I'll be keeping an eye on Kotaku. Acquisitions are to be had all around.

I wouldn't be so sure 1UP staffers are going to end up ANYWHERE in this economy.

A couple of you know I used to work for a Hearst arm, WCVB-TV.  To me, this is not a surprise.  Hearst is cutting everywhere it can, including the TV division.  WCVB is one of Hearst's better cash cows, as they're one of the top TV stations in New England.  So, the 1UP layoffs, given Hearst owning UGO...definitely don't shock me.

The only reason why I even read EGM before I quit buying it ('bout two, three years back) was because of Hsu and Chan, Seanbaby, and a handful of noteworthy reviews on some particular games that might have interested me at the time, so I'm not terribly mortified.
Still sucks though, from what I know EGM had quite a history, going as far as the 8-Bit days.

Apparently Retronauts will still continue to be done, but it'll be harder to produce episodes from here on without Pfister.

At least there is some good news out of all of this.

Well, that sucks. I never read EGM in years, but I remember it was my main gaming magazine for years as I was growing up. I think it was supposed to celebrate it's 20th anniversary this year. This drastic change of booting a lot of the staff also means the end of Broken Pixels in addition to many of the podcasts. =/ I hope those suddenly unemployed are able to find new jobs soon.

Hurray!

Why would you say this? Forty people are left without a job.

I liked EGM. Granted my subscription ended when I got into GameStop's Edge program, but I really did like the magazine's with and charm. The 3 review score system was also pretty nifty. Also sucks on a personal level. EGM was one of the places I wanted to try and end up eventually when I finish my journalism degree. I hope the world of gaming journalism doesn't all resort to online.

Well, print magazines are dead but for the funeral.

As for 1up, that's dumb, but big companies do it all the time. Usually what seems to happen is a bunch of the bloggers/writers form their own, different site, which is just as successful as the old one and pays them more because they don't have to give homage to their corporate overlords.

I can see print magazines staying in style if only because there are some demographics that online magazines may not be popular with.

Nah, the information is outdatedby the time it hits the stands, limited, and half of the thing is ads anyway. And the internet isn't even ubiquitous yet.

We'll end up with 1 or 2 print magazines per subject matter, tops.

I can imagine magazines with from-the-source info like Nintendo Power staying alive and well at least.

I can imagine them going digital, with limited print distribution in certain areas.

There was that rumor that there would be a Nintendo Power channel for Wii. I'd be surprised if one doesnt surface sometime soon. Cough up cash to cough up Wii Points for a subscription for a year. 1200 points per year. Or 500 points per issue. Because magazine pricing is stupid.

Everyone's feeling the economic crunch it seems.

Not much that could be done if they were in the red before the acquisition.

Wasn't 1up one of the most reliable sources out there, as in terms of not selling out their opinions to major companies?

I share Myst's thoughts.

Nah, the information is outdatedby the time it hits the stands,

Some magazines don't care so much about outdated information..? Not every magazine covers rapidly-growing fields like electronics/computers, etc.
