I'm starting the official Comic Con thread.

So, who's going? I'd like to meet up with anyone who's gonna be there. I have a hotel booked with some friends, so you could come over and I could rape you hang out with you.

I wish I was going. Silve had intended to go so I was going to force him to grab me any of the cool stuff they'd be handing out at the City of Heroes or possible Champions Online booths since it'd just be a key you'd enter in.
...But then he was all "Wait you have to REGISTER to get in?Huh?" so he's not going since he missed that. It's likely for the best...

Aww, that sucks. Yeah, the tickets sold out way fast this year.

I'll try grab you some swag, though. If I can.

I totally wrote a reply to this already, didn't I?

No, I will not be attending the Comic book convention despite being the comic book guy. This is okay because the whole comic-con thing is clearly just a pretense and has grown to be an Everything Basically convention. I might have to send one of you guys on a HOLY QUEST to grab me some-a-does exclusives if my other attendee can't come through for me.

It's for the best. Silve would just get brutally murdered by some fanboys when he'd try to explain to them why [BLANK] sucks. And then he'd just hang out at the Valve booth and annoy them endlessly in the hopes of getting hired and instead get slapped with a restraining order.

I bet that actually did happen in the past.

If anyone here *is* going to the Comic Con and would be willing to do some writeups for me for the big gaming news site on what's going on with Sega's booth...I would be very happy.

Plus, it ensures no fan drama news for at least a couple of days.  That can't be a bad thing.

Next year I have to make sure I get registering out of the way well before, because I always forget to plan a trip. Same for E3 (if I can find the credentials). Oh well. Have fun folks.

You say this like Comic Con is the only convention with spillover.  At Otakon--the biggest anime convention on the East Coast--I saw cosplayers from the Matrix, D.C. Comics, Marvel, and Futurama amongst others.  There were comic and non-Japanese movie/music poster dealers in the Dealers' Room, and artists in the artists alley who didn't draw in styles with big, sparkly eyes and brightly-colored hair.  Genre/media spillover is probably only noticeable at SDCC because it's the largest con in North America.  I'm sure Dragon Con and even Anthrocon are the same.

Oh yeah, I always give props to the token US comic character I see at an anime con. The best ones are the ones where you aren't sure if a person's character is american due to obscurity, or if you're not sure the person is in cosplay at all. At Anime North I saw a Barf.

Canada's SDCC is FanExpo, which is a merged comics/anime/horror/sci-fi/gaming convention. so everybody can blend in there. But a lot of anime fans stay away because they need some purity. I laugh at this.

It's called the Good Nite Inn. It's like 7 miles from the convention center, I think. I forget which road it's on, but it's near Gunpowder Dr and like... E St. I think.

Oh so you admit that all your "reporting" on fan drama is a bad thing? Then why do it? Are the ad hits really that important to you? Are you really that much of a cunt?

Pretty much this. Tristan, if you expect to make yourself serious as a journalist, reporting dramatic shit from Sonic Retro is as much news as Kotaku reporting Final Fantasy VII hentai: Incredibly dumb.

Take note that there are people out there who find both topics erotic.

You're all so lovely.

any of the cool stuff they'd be handing out at the City of Heroes [booth]

Nothing amazing so far, just a Knives costume toggle and an out-of-game "Awesome button" that flashes.

I saw someone who looked like a beardier Milo when driving home from work today. Also, I had to drive in front of the convention center. It was pretty crazy. The massive amount of people standing in front of the convention center almost made me glad I wasn't there.

news!
-Three new Transformer comics by good creative teams!
-Tons of new toys for Revenge Of The Fallen, rather than just the same ones getting recolored into the holiday season.
-A few more animated toys are going to get released.

-Marvel anime projects coming up.
-Deadpool showing up in Wolverine & The X-Men
-People enjoy the Green Lantern movie.

-Absolute Green Lantern Rebirth.

-Miracleman, (an old deriviative of Captain Marvel, IIRC) but had both Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman do what they do on characters making him much loved. Then the legal rights entered a state of limbo for over a decade, with everybody wanting a piece, and Todd Macfarlane messing up everything. Miracleman is liberated now and Marvel is going to bring it.

-Kickass could be good as it's name promised. But this is the same crowd that gave an eight minute ovation to Clerks 2 so let's see how it plays out in theaters.

As far as I'm concerned, the announcements and other official stuff at any con are almost always boring.  It's the cosplay and most of the fandom nonsense that makes for a good time.
