I play using GameRanger though (PC), not the default GameSpy. More games being played there.

From what I heard the PC version is the best version.

From what I heard the PC version is the best version.

It looks the best, but everything else about it sucks.

I'll start with interface stuff. First, the menus are unchanged from the console version. They're oversized and basic functions like scrolling through text with the scroll wheel on your mouse aren't available. You seriously have to hit the Page Up and Page Down keys to scroll through quest text.

It wouldn't be so bad, but a lot of the game is spent looking at these menus. Navigating your inventory is probably the worst part. Stuff like comparing weapons specs is a big hassle on the PC. Every PC RPG in the last decade has let you just hover your mouse over an item in your inventory, and after a second the specs of the item you currently have equipped pop up so you can compare them. Well not in Borderlands on PC. You have to highlight the item in your inventory that you want to see the specs for, then press E, and select the item you want to compare it to. This is a system that I'm sure works perfectly when playing with a gamepad, but is super annoying when you're playing with a mouse and keyboard.

Next up is lack of options. I wont go into too much detail, but with most PC games you can tweak pretty much anything you want in the options. But this is a typical console game port, where the only extensive options are resetting keybindings, and the graphical options are a handful of arbitrary sliders.

Third is Gamespy. If you want to play online, you have to use Gamespy. And it's not like a lot of games that use gamespy, where gamespy just manages the server browser. You have to have a Gamespy login ID, and login with it.

On top of that the service is really janky. I got sent a friend request, which didn't show up until I logged out, then back into gamespy. I then invited him to a game, and we weren't even able to text-chat in the lobby. Once we were in a game, his characters movement was really choppy and jumpy. I don't know if that was just his internet connection, or gamespy, but it was really really bad.

On to Field of View! The game defaults to having a very narrow field of view, and is the most annoying thing ever. You can't change it through any of the options, you have to edit an .ini file if you want it changed.

This is the game at the default FOV

And this is the game with the correct FOV for my 16:10 monitor

It makes all the difference in the world.

Anyway, this has gone on long enough. I guess what really annoys me with all this stuff, is that the game is in Unreal Engine 3. I can't imagine changing some of this stuff to work better would be THAT difficult.

Other than that, it's a pretty coo' game.
