I always thought Super Mario World was more fun than Super Mario Bros. 3. Not sure why, but I guess it felt more adventure-y to me, despite a lot of its mechanics being from SMB3.

The cape > *

I know people complain about the cape being game breaking, and they're right, but that's also the point of the cape, so they're wrong.

The one which had a motherfuckin' theatrical movie with cinematography from Robert Yeoman to hype it up...
made a bigger cultural impact

however being able to save and visit older stages with ease and branching paths and easy stage exiting made SMW an easier access experience. Although I did miss the variety of power-ups like frog suit and kuribo's shoe.

The cape is superior because it allows you to regain altitude.

World.  All else roughly equal - it had the new platforming and Layer-2 gimmicks, and they were executed so well and were usually super fun.  Well, that, and secret exits basically doubled the replay value right off the bat.  Lots of SMB3 levels had alternate paths to explore, but they didn't unlock brand new levels.

Although one soft spot I have for SMB3 is those couple of easter eggs on maps 2 & 3 that you had to use the hammer item to get.

Mario 3 was definitely a great game, but overall Super Mario World took what was great about 3 and refined it. There were some missteps - like what they did to Goombas, for example - but I still say that World is the superior game.

Tough call. I like both for different reasons.

Personally, I like World more, but objectively I love 'em both.

SMB3 has more iconic power-ups, more iconic worlds. The Racoon tail, Kuribo's Shoe, the Tanooki suit, Hammer Mario, Warp Whistles...

The Desert, Ocean, Giant Land, Sky Land, the Pipe Maze...

SMW isn't nearly as iconic. It's still a good game, mind you, but nobody remembers Cape Mario as well as they do Raccoon Mario. Yoshi is that game's enduring legacy, and... well... Yoshi hasn't been good since Yoshi's Island on the SNES.

3 definitely has more iconic worlds. I always loved the credits sequence where it shows the names and a slight scene from each one, but, the levels were so damn short.  World's levels had a nice length to them. Doesn't have as good of powerups, and the fireball sound effect is shit, but the game was massive. So many secrets, so many levels you could skip entirely if you didn't search.

It's really hard to pick one over the other. I have really strong memories of playing 3 with my parents as a kid, so that really boosts its "value" for me, where as I feel I played Mario World pretty much alone once I got it. Boss battles in Mario World, and the dungeons as a whole, are way more memorable too.

So, uh ... World, I think? I don't know.

I watched some kid, and his sister play SMB3 once. They lived across the street. But I never played either game, so I'm going to have to say NBA Jam.

those kids..they also played some game with like..it was like a wheel with a stick and handle bars on top, but i don't wanna say tricycle. and they used bed sheets where doors were supposed to be. they really tried to make things personal there.

i don't wanna say tricycle, because the wheel wasn't big at the bottom.

could of been a scooter.
